clown picture Sad Clown

This sad clown is one of a set of two which was painted by my cousin, and precipitaed the start of "le Salon's" collection.
On the back of the two the following message is inscribed: " One of the defining moments of my childhood was being frightened by a clown act at a circus. I've hated clowns ever since."
Some cultures in Africa drove nails and other sharp objects into a sacred sculpture to invoke the spirit within the object to intercede for them, to empower them and overcome their enemies. I like to think of this painting as an exorcism, painted to ward off the bad experience.
